The Village Society’s third Flower, Fruit & Vegetable show, organized by Viki Hooper, took place in the Old Reading Room on Saturday 22nd July. Despite being 8 weeks without rain the flower, fruit and vegetable classes were well supported and most had 3 or more entries. Handicrafts were up and the cookery was down. There were 5 child entries. The number of participants nearly doubled on last years figures with 22 making entries against only 12 in 2005!
The Old Reading Room, with it’s walls covered in archive photographs of the village dating back to 1860 provided an ideal background and ambiance to the array of beautiful blooms, nurtured and well displayed vegetables, delicate embroidery and needlework, mouth watering cakes, pastries, breads and homemade jams and preserves, amounting to some 109 entries to be decoratively displayed and judged by John Wild (Flowers, Fruit & Vegetables) and his wife Julia (Cakes & Handicrafts).
The assembly and placement into categories of the entries took placed as they arrived, with Stewards, Mary & Tom Hicks supervising the process through to the judging. Once this was completed it was necessary to allocate the final designation of result (place) cards to each of the sixty categories. Doors opened to the general public at 2.30pm, also giving the participants the opportunity to see how their entries had fared!
Setting aside the list of individual sub-category placed items, the main category winners were:
* Best In Show: Mrs Enid Lambert
* Best Cookery Exhibit: Mary Hicks
* Best ornamental handicraft: Sue Skyes
* Best Handicraft with a purpose: Mrs Enid Lambert
* Best Flower Exhibit: Gina Beaujeux
* Best Vegetable Exhibit: Viki Hooper
This was undoubtedly another successful event which was well received by the people taking part and visitors. A real sense of community was apparent and the visitors were enthusiastic and complimentary of what they saw. Mr Wild noted the standard of exhibits were excellent considering the growing season. He also reflected that the people were exceptional friendly and were pleased for everybody’s success’s.
At the end of the show the Village Society Chairman, John Taylor, presented the unusual “Best in Show” Silver Trophy to Mrs Enid Lambert for her beautiful Christening Shawl knitted in Shetlands 2-ply wool and thanked Viki Hooper for organising such a successful show, John & Julia Wild for acting as judges, Tom and Mary Hicks for their support on the day with stewarding and general help, Beryl Taylor and Liz Davy for the very welcome cups of tea, and Raymond Saunders & Michael Hooper for “pitching in” where necessary.
