The Formal Opening and crowning of the May Queen at 12 Noon was conducted by Cllr. Martin Wilby who kindly stepped in to replace Richard Bacon MP who due to his terrible losses was detained in London. The organizers expressed their condolences to the MP.
The May Queen Stacey Leeder and Princess Jade Gallant & Georgia Clark arrived in a magnificent incredibly long, gleaming white “stretch limousine”, to be duly “Crowned by Martin Wilby with the introductions conducted by Michael Harrowven the Compere for the event.
With the weather being kind, with a mix of heat and cold when the clouds skated across the sun, the providers of food and drink were kept busy, particularly “Gills Grills” who had queues all day long and then in the evening for tasty grills!
Following an afternoon of fun and entertainment the Grand Draw took place at 4pm for a wide range of prizes donated by local businesses and the local organizations who manned the stalls.

On 16th April the Dickleburgh Village Society had a thoroughly interesting talk/slide show given by Rosemary and Peter Salt covering 100 years of change in the centre of Norwich from 1850 – 1950. There were an incredible number of photographs from early ones of belching factory chimneys in the city centre, ‘honey carts’ on cobbled streets, open sewers and slums to pictures of the Great Flood in1912 when 15,000 people had to be evacuated, bomb damage during the Second World War which was bigger than many of us remembered and finally street parties. There used to be a pub for every day and a church for every Sunday in the year. In the 1890’s electricity reached Norwich and the roads were widened to make way for trams that ran until 1935 when motorbuses replaced them. Norwich in 1850 had just 65,000 inhabitants living within a two and a half mile circle. Today many of the famous buildings like the Theatre Royal and the Great Eastern Hotel (now Hotel Nelson) are still here, but many others including store names like Curls and Bonds (they were known to sell 1000 hats on a Saturday) have now disappeared.
Our next big event will be the Horticultural Show on Saturday 21 July from 2.30 to 4.00pm at the Old Reading Room. Open to everyone – exhibitors and visitors – it will include categories for flowers, flower arranging, fruit and vegetables, cookery, handicrafts, a children’s class and fun items; so do have a go! Schedules are now available from Vikki Hooper, Moor View, Semere Green Lane, Dickleburgh, 01379 741401 and entries should be submitted by 9.00am on Thursday 19th July.
