Dickleburgh Christmas Fayre

Filed under: Village Events, The Village Centre News — sean @ 1:57 pm

In The Village Centre, Saturday 15th December 2007.

Xmas Fayre 2007This was truly a real “Village” event, with all the stalls being purely from village organisations – not a “commercial” stall in sight. Most were there, The Royal British Legion Men’s & Ladies, Friends of Dickleburgh School, Dickleburgh Bowling Club, All Saints Church PCC, Good Companions, Village Centre Events, Village Society and Rushall PCC.

Despite a published and advertised opening time of 2.30pm, some thought it was 2.00pm so it was necessary to open earlier, with the event being opened by Lord Ron Duffy of Denbury Downs.

Introduced by Fayre Chairman, Brian Baker, it was explained that Lord Duffy did indeed reside locally and in fact arrived in the area as simply Doctor Ron Duffy becoming heavily involved in the Royal British Legion Branch. He subsequently inherited the title as a result of a death in his family.

The hall itself having recently been redecorated and garnished with large Christmas Decorations was further enhanced by the display of auction items on the stage area offset by hanging pairs of pheasants, donated by Sir Rupert Mann, and sprigs of well berried locally picked holly.

The build up of visitors was quite dramatic with the homemade food being a popular target with one stall being cleared of a large quantity of small Pheasant Pies almost immediately.

All the stalls did very well, in most cases exceeding expectations. Father Christmas in his Grotto handed out over 40 items to eager (some fearful) children, whilst large quantities of teas, coffees, home made cakes and bacon butties were consumed.

The auction, brought forward time wise by demand, conducted by the regular team of Tim Baldry assisted by Francis Woodrow, sold off all the items donated by the clubs taking part, and the villagers themselves with the largest being a complete fireplace and surround, with the Grand Draw following up once more with a range of prizes donated by clubs, villagers and local businesses. The winners of the Children’s Christmas Card competition, Judged and presented by Lord & Lady Duffy were announced and suddenly all was gone and it was left to clear up.

The list of people who deserve special mention and thanks for all their work in organising and preparing the event, taking part and finally clearing up is long, but both they and those who came along know who they are as their commitment was there for all to see!

RBLW, Christmas Dinner In Gorleston

Filed under: Local Clubs — sean @ 1:53 pm

Friday 14th December 2007

Organised by Joyce Hammond, Chairman of the Women’s Dickleburgh Branch who has been their Standard Bearer for 54 years and recently awarded a certificate for being a “poppy seller” for 50 years, thirty-eight members and friends attended this annual event in a banqueting hall at the Cliff Hotel, Gorleston.

Picked up in Dickleburgh by coach at 11.00am they enjoyed a three course meal served swiftly by a team of high speed waitresses with a choice of starters, Turkey or Beef Roast and a range of desserts with tea/coffee to finish.

Following the singing of a few carols, entertainment followed with a singer, dancing and an amusing quiz. Tea/coffee with mince pies being served leading up to departure at 5.00pm.

Opinion was that the food and entertainment was enjoyed to the extent that a booking for 2008 was made!
